This Latinx Heritage Month Tiny Desk is celebrating with an ‘El Tiny’ takeover, that includes a big selection of artists from all corners of Latinidad.
“La gente tiene la patita del conejo / y yo tengo a Benito completo,” Ivy Queen quips, lighting a candle that includes Dangerous Bunny at an El Tiny altar to reggaeton (“Folks have the rabbit’s foot / I’ve all of Benito.”) Even her jokes movement. Because of way over luck, “La Caballota” has carried and handed the torch because the ’90s with an ironclad sense of self and unwavering dedication to the ladies and femmes she writes for.
And she or he’s achieved it in no unsure phrases. After a propulsive efficiency of “La Vida es Así,” she soberly says that ladies are judged it doesn’t matter what. For a very long time, she was probably the most seen canvas upon which projections of girls in reggaeton have been positioned, and her expertise was nurtured from inside. “Yo sabía que a mi no había que darmela porque yo la tenía,” she later notes. (“I knew that it did not need to be given to me as a result of I had it.”) The street has widened, not and not using a battle.
Lastly, she addresses the mujeres straight for the music. “Tenemos derecho a ser feliz, tenemos derecho a cambiar, a cuidarnos, a protegernos,” she exhorts. (“We’ve got the appropriate to be pleased, we’ve got the appropriate to vary, to handle ourselves, to guard ourselves.”) “Quiero Bailar,” twenty years later and actually carried out behind a desk, feels as pressing and rebel now. Or, as she places it, merely: “Guys, that is for the ladies.” With Ivy Queen, it at all times has been.
